Auction Photo Tips

How to create effective digital images of your products! (part 1 of 4)
Courtesy of BidBoosters.com

A picture is worth a thousand words. A cliché, it's true, but when it comes to selling online it's a reality. Your picture can mean the difference between getting the sale or not. You must present your product in the best possible way so that potential buyers can clearly see its important details.

The photo has to be focused and the product arranged in a pleasing manner. And, since we're talking about digital files here, the size of the files have to be small enough to download as quickly as possible through the Internet to the buyer's computer.

All this may seem daunting to you if you don't have a lot of experience with digital images. But, if we take a step-by-step look at what's involved you'll see that you can create professional looking images that will make your products irresistible.

Getting photos ready for viewing online is really a two stage process. First you take the picture and then you get it ready (called editing) to display online.

There are several different options for creating digital pictures. You can use a regular film camera and have the pictures developed and converted to digital format by a local film developer. You can take photos with a film camera, have them developed and use a scanner to convert the prints to digital files. Or, you can use a digital camera to take digital photos.

If you are a serious online auction seller, the best option is to take your photos with a digital camera. In this article we'll focus on using a digital camera to get photos. If you don't have a digital camera, it's an investment you should definitely make. The cost of the camera will more be more than made up in the sales that quality pictures will generate.

Selecting Basic Digital Camera Features
This article is not intended to go into great detail about choosing a digital camera, but there are some features that you must have:

Resolution
Resolution is measured in 'megapixels'. A megapixel is a basic unit of programmable color on a computer image. The higher the megapixel resolution is, the better the quality of the image.

With the prices of digital cameras dropping it's becoming more and more affordable to buy high end equipment. Your camera should have at least a 2.0 megapixel resolution. Buy a camera with as high a resolution as you can afford. .

Macro setting
Be sure that the camera you buy has a macro setting. This setting enables you to get very close to an object without losing focus.

Auto focus, auto exposure
Most digital cameras have auto focus and auto exposure settings built in. Auto focus and auto exposure settings produce excellent results. Unless you are a real photography buff, you will appreciate not having to fiddle around with manual settings.

Zoom lens
Especially if you sell small objects, a zoom lens feature makes it easier to show the details on an object.

Now, let's prepare for the photo... (proceed to part 2 of 4)
